Thyphoid fever: Signs and symptoms of typhoid fever

Typhoid Fever Vaccine.

Typhoid fever is caused by salmonella typhi. Symptoms like head ache, cough, diarrhea or constipation is common. Antibiotics are the common course of treatment  unlike Malaria.

Typhoid affects people of all ages when food and water gets contaminated with the excreta of an infected person.

Signs and symptoms

  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • High fever
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Cough
  • Loss of appetite
  • Rash or rose colored spots

Early illness( Symptoms)

Dry cough, headaches, loss of appetite, rash, sweating, muscle aches, weight loss, stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation, increasing fever etc.

Later on symptoms

  • Becoming delirious
  • laying motionless with eyes half closed from exhaustion. Known as typhoid state
  • May result to life threatening complications.


When Salmonella typhu is passed in faeces and urine of infected person and passes to your food or water when the infected person uses the toilet without washing of hands after use, you become infected too from the contaminated foods and water or by direct contact with infected person. This cycle culminates to typhoid fever illness.

Handling your food/water

There are people who are carriers of typhoid because they never recover completely and harbor no symptoms of the disease themselves yet to pass it in their urine.

Risk factors.

  • All races are at risk but it is common in Africa, South America, south east Asia and India
  • Travelling to areas where typhoid is common
  • Close contact with infected persons
  • Drinking water and eating food contaminated with the bacteria
  • Handling Salmonella typhi in the Lab as a microbiologist


  • Kidney or bladder infection
  • psychiatric problems like hallucinations, paranoid psychosis, delirium
  • Pneumonia
  • Infection of major blood vessels( Mycotic aneurysm)
  • Inflammation of heart muscle( Mycarditis)
  • Inflammation of pancreas( Pancreatitis)
  • Infection and inflammation of membranes surrounding brain and spinal cord( Meningitis)
  • Inflammation of lung of valves and heart( endocaritis)

N/B: Life threatening complications may result to internal bleeding or holes in the intestine developing in third week of illness causing other symptoms like blood stream infection( sepsis), vomiting, stomach ache etc.


  • Eat foods hygienically prepared by health conscious people
  • Drink safe water
  • Improved Sanitation quality
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Eat hot foods. Bacteria’s hardly survive in hot foods
  • Avoid raw fruits and vegetables. They may be contaminated with water with which they were washed.
  • Drink only treated water
  • When you get symptoms or a carrier, drink and complete antibiotic course following doctor’s prescription

See your doctor

Once you get signs and symptoms of typhoid to begin treatment immediately with antibiotics recommended. Antibiotics like Amoxicillin etc
