Frequent urination

When urination becomes frequent it becomes a worry. It may be due to mild reasons like the weathers. The body tends to give more urge for urination in colder weathers and seasons. It could also be due to diuretic use( drugs used for hypertensive patients), something serious like diabetics or even mild issues like quantity of water gulped at exceptional frequencies.

We all tell our stories differently when it comes to the number of times we pass urine and for others, they pass even more urine, more frequently than the others. So for those who get the scary feeling of frequent urination and wonder if everything is fine with them, here we go

Causes of frequent urination

Some causes of changes in urine are mild and some serious


As the uterus grows which is normal in pregnancy, it places pressure on the bladder thus causing frequent urination


The body has to readily rid itself of unused glucose and it is always through urine, thus allowing large amounts of urine and frequent urination


Functionality with the bladder changes in stroke patients when there is a damage in nerves that links to the bladder leading to sudden and frequent urge to urinate

Diabetes insipidus.

The body in this case makes lots of colorless, odorless urine causing frequent urination


When calcium levels in blood are higher than normal, the organs and parathyroid glands become overactive causing frequent urination accompanied with excessive thirst, stomach upset, vomiting, nausea.

Diuretic use

Excess fluids from system is flushed when medications used to treat high blood pressure works in the kidney, thus causing frequent urination

Prostrate problems

Enlarged prostrate can block flow of urine when it presses against the urethra causing irritability as the bladder contracts causing frequent urination

Interstial cystitis

Accompanied by pain in bladder and pelvic region and causes frequent urination


many times people with overactive bladder syndrome urinate frequently and urinating is not a symptom but the problem

Symptoms of frequent urination

1. Sudden urge to urinate increases and may affect daily routine

2. Abdominal pain

3. Urinary incontinency

4. Frequent urination at night


  • Limit caffeine or alcohol intake
  • Incorporate  kegel exercises into your routine
  • Drink less fluids during bedtime

And other symptoms dependent on causes may be

  • Painful urination
  • Dribbling after urinating
  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Chills
  • Vomiting
  • Back pains and other accompanying symptoms

If you notice pain, incontinency, blood in urine, difficulty urinating despite urge along with fever, vomiting and discharge from private parts along with increased thirst, then its time you speak to your doctor to ascertain the cause, diagnose and rule out possibility of a kidney infection or damage to prevent further complications

You may need to prove to your doctor details of your medications and the below

  • Change in odour, color and smell of urine( is it lighter or darker in color)?
  • Describe the symptoms
  • As well as what beverages you take and at what frequency
